Northern

This plant across the hall, soaks up what ambient light it can get from a north-facing window.

Backlit

I'm intrigued by the way light hits things, sometimes creating shadow, sometimes shining through.

Bloom

That plant by my window blooms year-round, though I rarely get more than one or two blooms at a time. There are three right now with another three on the way.

Leaves

This little plant was a gift from a friend when I lived in Idaho. I found an olive-mustard-flame painted pot and put it in my window.

Orange

This chair may need to be re-upholstered soon. But it sits in the middle of the Youth Room. Gaudy. Orange. Loud. They call it "The Throne."

Window

Two chairs, each in front of a window, fill up one wall of a downstairs room. They're ugly and spare. But they work.

Base

This small stand has two shelves filled with vintage copies of some of my favorite titles.

Quilt Squares

This quilt was a gift from my mom's aunt and uncle. Christmas 1978. It was the same year I got my first tricycle.

Fringe

My sister found this small carpet on a trip to Morocco.

Red Bag

Hang a red bag from a crystal door knob. Instant color contrast.

Pull

Drawer pull on the old desk in my sister's room. I picked up the desk for $10 at the Idaho Youth Ranch thrift store in Nampa, Idaho. It's barely holding together. But rustic.

Latch

I love antique hardware pieces that continue to be functional. This latch is on the window in the room across the hall.

Hanging

Twin to yesterday's door knob. It's on the other side of the door. From below.

Crystal

Pillow

I really like that pillow.

Alcove

There's a pillow and a blanket on a small wicker chair upstairs. It's not actually that comfortable a place to sit. But it looks like it should be.

Hat

I've been wearing this hat summers for the last 5 or 6 years. I got it out of a Lost & Found box at the school where I used to work.

Jacket

My favorite color. And it's warm.

Milk

This milk jar came from an Idaho Youth Ranch thrift store in Idaho. I keep coins in it.

Elephant Poop

The engraving on the right is papier mache. The "papier" is made from fibers found in elephant poop. My sister bought it in Rwanda.

Post Cap

The post cap on the left seemed like it should stand next to the little blue vase. The first was a find from a friend. I don't know where I found the other.

Arranged

On the landing above the stairs, outside my sister's bedroom, I've placed a small shelf in front of an estate-sale quilt. There are books, an engraving, an old green bottle, a small vase, a cast-iron post cap.

Clips

I used to keep them in an Office Depot box (cardboard) inside a desk drawer. But I kept forgetting where I'd put them.

Broken

This small vase sits on a bookcase in my room. It's one of the few remaining pieces in a collection I had back in high school. There's a chip out of the top.
